Oregon GEAR UP 5 R ModelOregon GEAR UP's goal is to help all students access and find success in college and career. How do we do that? It all comes down to our model, the 5 "R"s, which summarizes the key research about what makes a difference in helping students get to and through postsecondary education. These principles serve as a framework for everything we do, from developing objectives to planning and implementing programming.

We work with our schools to inventory all of their college and carer readiness efforts in the context of the 5 "R" framework, including other programs and partnerships. For example, several GEAR UP schools participate in Juntos, a program designed to build relationships between Latino students and parents while raising awareness about the steps to attend college. Other examples of program partnerships, categorized by "R", include:

Reaching Higher

  • Mindset Works provides resources for educators and students to build a growth mindset, motivation and self-efficacy.
  • PBIS teaches social-emotional-behavioral competencies and helps develop safe and effective school environments.

Rigor

  • AVID trains educators to use proven practices that develop students critical thinking, literacy and math skills that will prepare them for success in high school, college, and a career.
  • Oregon STEM Hubs offer resources and professional development for educators in STEM fields.

Relationships

  • ASPIRE matches trained and supportive adult volunteer mentors with middle and high school students to develop a plan to help them meet their education goals beyond high school.
  • Beaver Hangouts virtually pairs college student coaches with classrooms across Oregon to discuss college readiness topics.

Raising Awareness

"Program partnerships are crucial to GEAR UP schools for student success," said Stephanie Carnahan, director of Oregon GEAR UP. "Our model is designed to be a comprehensive framework for college and career readiness that allows schools to take advantage of existing programs; we don’t want schools reinventing the wheel."
