A small coalition of Oregon GEAR UP educators, staff and one student joined over 1,700 attendees at the NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference in San Francisco from July 15-17. Participants heard from plenary speakers including Representative Chaka Fattah (D-PA); actress, STEM advocate, and Texas Instruments spokesperson Mayim Bialyk; and renowned economist Anthony Carnevale who currently heads the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce. In addition, attendees chose from over 143 educational sessions covering best practices in FAFSA completion, the transition to college, and much more.

Over 80 students from across the country participated in the annual Youth Congress which includes three days of leadership activities and personal development for high school students. Alyssa Harms, a rising sophomore at La Pine High School, represented Oregon admirably, including performing on stage with a team in front of the entire audience about encouraging teachers to impart information utilizing all of the different learning styles. Many thanks to the NCCEP staff for this robust conference!
