In 2014, we started working with 21 rural communities to build college-going cultures.

In addition to the 38 schools in these communities, we served over 100 other Oregon schools through our Affiliate program and our statewide initiatives.

Because of GEAR UP...

we implemented a plan that got everyone in the school involved, encouraged our students to reach their full potential, and helped and encouraged our staff to acknowledge and celebrate the growth and progress of our students. -Chelsea Wedam, Chiloquin Junior/Senior High School

2021, our last year of the grant, called for creativity and flexibility.

Through coronavirus, wildfires, and other challenges, our schools and staff adapted to supporting students in new ways.

  • We provided additional funds for schools to help students learn safely either at home or at school.

  • Educators participated in virtual professional development, coaching, and planning sessions.

I am grateful for...

the flexibility, agility, and resilience shown - especially this year but always. We appreciate your amazing efforts and dedication! -GEAR UP team member

Our statewide programs focused on getting students to and through college.

Oregon Goes To College is our statewide initiative that helps students apply, pay and go to college.

We also funded seven community colleges in GEAR UP communities to target student success and persistence.

Because of GEAR UP...

Oregon Goes to College has shifted the college-going culture by creating three inspiring events to support students on their path after high school." -Vicky Roller, Counselor, Newport High School

After seven years, our impact is clear and will be sustained.

GEAR UP works. From Cave Junction to Elgin, Boardman to Dayton, our schools have built college-going cultures and are supporting students postsecondary plans.

I'm grateful that GEAR UP...

has helped make system change in that ALL of my students (and future students) will always know that college is possible for ANYONE. -GEAR UP Coordinator
