GEAR UP staff, school coordinators and administrators travelled to San Francisco for the annual gathering of GEAR UP programs from across the country. Oregon GEAR UP participated in three well-received sessions, including Rogue River Junior/Senior High School's focus on restorative justice (pictured below).
Approximately 60 middle and high school educators spent two days delving into family engagement with the Parent Institute for Quality Education. "I enjoyed the practical advice and the perspective that it brought to handle relationships with parents," said one attendee.
Our always popular Student Leadership Event, once again hosted by Seeds Training, expanded to four days at the OSU-Cascades campus in Bend. 130 middle and high school students practiced team building, communication and leadership skills under the guidance of college student mentors.
Oregon GEAR UP also sponsored or provided scholarships for campus-based summer programs for middle and high school students at GEAR UP schools. Opportunities included a summer bridge program for rising college freshman at Blue Mountain Community College, STEM Academy camps at Oregon State University, visiting campuses during Oregon Private College Week and the Young Artists Institute, Academy and Konaway Nika Tillicum programs at Southern Oregon University. "I learned what my major should be in college," said one Young Artists Institute participant.
