Governor Kotek Proclaims GEAR UP Week in Oregon

Oregon’s Governor, Tina Kotek, has officially named September 22-26, 2025, GEAR UP Week. This is an important time for us to celebrate our work in helping students from rural and low-income families build great futures.
GEAR UP Week is a national celebration, led by our partners at the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP), that recognizes the good work of GEAR UP programs across the country. Here in Oregon, we have worked hard since 2002 to help more than 40,000 students. We have partnered with 109 schools in 48 towns and communities. Through our Oregon Goes To College program, we also help 75% of Oregon's high schools prepare students for college and careers.

What is GEAR UP?
Oregon GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded program from the U.S. Department of Education. It's designed to increase the number of students from low-income families who pursue and succeed in education and training after high school. We believe that a successful life can begin on many different paths. Exploring career interests and learning about how college can help students achieve their goals can be one of the best ways to get there.
Our goal is to help students see that "college" means more than just a big university. It also includes:
- Community colleges
- Trade schools
- Job training, like an apprenticeship
At GEAR UP, "college" is any education or training after high school where a student can earn a certificate or degree. We empower students and their families to find the right path for them, a path that leads to a great career and a great life.

Our GEAR UP Schools Celebrate
Across the state, our GEAR UP schools will have special events for GEAR UP Week. Our students work hard through tough challenges, these events help them get excited about their futures and develop a culture of college and career success. This week is also a great chance to introduce the GEAR UP program to new students and families.
Students might take part in activities like:
- College spirit days to get excited about their futures.
- Workshops to learn how to apply for college and get money for it.
- Talks with guest speakers who share their own stories of success.
- Showcases of student work that show how the help of GEAR UP has made a difference.

How You Can Help
Helping students get ready for their future is a job for all of us. Here are some ways you can help:
- Talk to students about their dreams. Remind them that working hard can open many doors.
- Volunteer at local schools or youth groups to be a mentor.
- Find resources for planning for college from our Oregon Goes To College program.
