Hands-on learning and high energy. Our students are ready for the challenges ahead.

From June 23-26, over fifty determined middle and high school students from across Oregon gathered at the University of Portland for the 2025 Oregon GEAR UP Student Leadership Camp. This multi-day program offered hands-on leadership training, real-world team challenges, and a solid look at college life, equipping our young people to forge their own bright futures.

What is GEAR UP?

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded program designed to increase college readiness and success for students from low-income families. We help Oregon’s young people, especially those from families facing tough times, gain the skills and support they need to build a strong future. We ensure federal resources are put to work locally, opening doors to education and training for good jobs and self-reliance right here in our communities.

Camp Highlights: Skills and Grit

Our Leadership Camp, led by our partners at SEEDS Training, exemplifies this commitment. Here, students don't just learn; they do. They master vital communication, goal-setting, and leadership skills through demanding activities like campus scavenger hunts and outdoor challenges. Every student gains what's needed to stand tall and lead.

As Grace Whitley, a Graduate Intern and Team Lead, states: "Leadership Camp helps students see themselves as capable leaders who belong on a college campus. We give them skills, confidence, and real experiences, making higher education accessible and achievable." Oregon GEAR UP, SEEDS Training, and the University of Portland offered a practical college experience, making higher education tangible and exciting for these future leaders.
