Congresswoman Bonamici Joins GEAR UP West Conference to Champion Students
We were so proud to host the 19th annual GEAR UP West Conference right here in Portland last month! Hundreds of dedicated educators, counselors, and leaders from over 30 states shared the best ways to help all our students prepare for college and careers after high school.
A Strong Voice for Our Students
A major highlight was the inspiring speech given by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. Her support is a strong signal for the vital work we do across Oregon and the country, especially for hardworking rural students.
Congresswoman Bonamici stressed that investing in young people is essential. She believes every student deserves a clear path to success, no matter their background or where they live.
"Education is the best investment that we can make. It changes lives, it changes livelihoods."
She spent time at the conference, seeing firsthand the dedication of our educators and understanding the students we serve. She saw that our commitment lasts, proving that "once a GEAR UP school, always a GEAR UP school." Her support confirms how important our work is for securing a strong future for all Oregonians.
Celebrating Our Community's Heart
The conference began with powerful performances that showed the talent and heart of our Oregon GEAR UP community.
• Students from the Midnight Travelerz (Klamath Tribes) performed traditional Indigenous drumming.
• Dayton Junior/Senior High School presented a vibrant folklorico dance.
• A former GEAR UP student from Stanfield, Oregon, shared a great poem , showing the passion of Oregon's students.
These moments reflected our core mission: lifting up communities through learning and connection.
The three-day conference continued with discussions on important topics like rural student access, student engagement, and new technology in education. Our goal is to make sure every student sees college and career training within reach.
