Oregon received its first six-year GEAR UP grant in 2002, working with 16 clusters (consisting of a high school and one or more feeder middle schools) around the state. A second federal grant began in 2008 with a focus on supporting 12 new rural communities. An additional group of 10 clusters, concentrated in Curry, Coos, and Douglas counties, joined in 2011, with support from The Ford Family Foundation. A third federal GEAR UP in 2014 served 21 communities until 2021. In 2022 we welcomed 10 new rural communities that will be served until 2029.
